It’s Deaf Awareness Week 2024.
The annual celebration goes from strength to strength as more businesses, organisations and people get on board to support this essential initiative.
Deaf Awareness Week – organised by the UK Council on Deafness – aims to raise awareness of Deaf issues and improve access to education, health, social care and employment for Deaf people.
It also highlights the importance of embracing and recognising language and Deaf culture and improving the quality of services for the Deaf community.
Throughout the week, hundreds of events are taking place across the UK. As always, Sign Solutions is getting involved by amplifying its messages and helping to give the people and organisations we work with a richer understanding of the issues and challenges Deaf people still face daily, and how to overcome them.
What is Deaf Awareness Week and why is it important?
Deaf Awareness Week is a national event that aims to raise awareness of deafness and hearing loss, and the importance of inclusion and accessibility.
More than 10 million people in the UK have hearing loss and by 2035, it’s estimated that this will increase to 15.6 million people.
Deaf Awareness Week 2024’s theme is ‘Celebrating Love and Trust’. It aims to create a collaborative environment where individuals, businesses and public sector organisations work together towards a more inclusive society. Better education, awareness raising advocacy will ensure that love and trust guide us toward a world where everyone can access the support they need to communicate freely, regardless of their hearing abilities.
Deaf Awareness Week 2024 encompasses those who communicate with British Sign Language, as well as non-BSL users, who make up a significant portion of the Deaf population. Despite their numbers, this group is frequently overlooked and underrepresented in discussions surrounding Deafness. Their experiences, challenges and contributions are often sidelined, highlighting a critical need for greater inclusivity and understanding within the broader conversation about Deaf awareness.
Every year, Deaf Awareness Week is supported nationally by more than 100 charities and organisations that work with Deaf people. It’s backed by thousands more people and businesses across the UK. It helps to give people a better understanding of the impact of language barriers on Deaf people and promotes the importance of BSL. Most importantly, it’s about understanding and helping Deaf people to ensure they feel involved, engaged and supported and aren’t disadvantaged in everyday situations that hearing people can take for granted.
Everyone can get involved in Deaf Awareness Week, including individuals and organisations who work, live or interact with Deaf or Hard of Hearing people.
What can you do to support Deaf Awareness Week 2024?
Sign Solutions is a proud supporter of Deaf Awareness Week, and we’ll be doing our bit throughout the week to raise awareness, amplify its aims and messages via our social media channels, and running some ‘lunch and learn’ sessions for clients on the importance of Deaf awareness in the workplace.
Knowing what the issues are and how to address them is vital. Everything starts with education.
We regularly deliver Deaf Awareness Training sessions to businesses and individuals across the UK, which aim to help delegates adopt inclusive practices and effective communication strategies when interacting with Deaf people in various settings, such as the workplace, education, healthcare and social situations.
We also provide fully-funded Access to Work and job interview communication support to help make the recruitment process as accessible as possible by translating application forms, updating policies and implementing workplace adjustments for Deaf employees. And, of course, if you need a BSL interpreter in a hurry, we can help you find one.
Supporting Deaf Awareness Week is easy. If you or your business want to get involved, here are a few things you can do:
Hold a Deaf Awareness event
Holding an event is the best way to show your organisation’s support for Deaf Awareness Week. It can be something relaxed and informal like a coffee morning or lunchtime talk. Or it may be something more structured, like a workshop or seminar where you can talk about the issues affecting Deaf people in your workplace.
Deaf Awareness Training
Deaf Awareness Week provides the perfect backdrop to talk about Deaf issues with your staff and introduce Deaf Awareness Training. It can give your team the confidence and skills they need to communicate with Deaf or Hard of Hearing colleagues and customers. You don’t have to deliver it right away, but booking a Deaf Awareness Course now, while it’s still fresh in your mind, is the best way to strike while the iron is hot and get something in the diary to work towards.
Sign up to the Disability Confident scheme
Disability Confident is a Government scheme designed to help businesses attract, recruit and retain disabled people. It replaced the previous Two Ticks scheme.
The scheme helps employers think about making their workplace more accessible. It’s an effective way of demonstrating to staff and customers that you’re committed to creating an accessible workplace. It’s also a good way of encouraging people to talk openly about Deaf issues and what your organisation can do about them.
Hit your socials
Look out for posts relating to Deaf Awareness Week on social media and add a like or comment. Share information about Deaf issues in your newsletters or through other communication channels to educate others about Deafness and hearing loss. There will be lots of great content coming out throughout the week, so use your own channels to amplify the messages and help them reach a wider audience.
Audit your business
Deaf Awareness Week provides the perfect starting point for auditing your business or organisation to understand precisely how accessible and inclusive it is for Deaf people. For example, do you use assistive technology like hearing loop systems or instant video relay services to enable Deaf people to communicate with hearing people?
Do you use BSL interpreters? The Government’s Access to Work scheme financially supports reasonable adjustments in the workplace.
Are all your policies and procedures up to date? Are they inclusive and accommodating for deaf employees and customers? Is your website, social media and marketing content accessible to Deaf individuals? Does it include closed captions, transcripts or clear visual cues?
These are just a few things to consider. With Deaf Awareness Week as your backdrop, now’s the ideal time to take a closer look at your organisation to see where you can improve.
