British Sign Language

British Sign Language (BSL) is the first or preferred language of around 150,000 people in the UK. BSL is a language in its own right, with its own grammar structure, and regional variations.

British Sign Language (BSL) / English Interpreters

NRCPD registered or equivalent

BSL/English interpreters translate between spoken English and British Sign Language, enabling clear, two-way communication between Deaf and hearing people across a wide range of settings.

Lipspeakers

NRCPD registered or equivalent

Lipspeakers silently repeat speech using clear lip patterns, natural gestures and facial expressions, helping lipreaders follow conversations more easily.

We also offer Lipspeakers with Additional Sign, who combine lipspeaking with supportive signs and fingerspelling.

Notetakers

Electronic and Manual – NRCPD registered or equivalent

Manual Notetakers provide clear, accurate written notes across a range of settings, including education, healthcare, and the workplace.

Electronic Notetakers used linked laptops to produce real-time notes, which can be saved and edited afterwards to support personal review and understanding.

Speech-to-Text Reporters

NRCPD/BIVR Members

A Speech-to-Text Reporter provides a live, word-for-word transcription of everything spoken, displayed on a screen for real-time access.

They capture not only spoken works but also relevant sounds and context, such as laughter or applause, ensuring a complete and accurate record of communication.

Deafblind Interpreters

Visual Frame, Hands-On, or Manual NRCPD Registered or equivalent

Deafblind Manual interpreters communicate by spelling words onto the Deafblind person’s hands using touch, enabling direct access.

Deafblind Hands-On interpreters guide the Deafblind person’s hands to feel BSL signs, supporting understanding through movement and shape.

Visual Frame interpreters adapt their signing into a smaller, clearer space to match an individual’s visual field and communication needs.

Communication Support Workers (CSWs)

Communication Support Workers support Deaf children and young people in foundation education, helping them access learning and participate fully.

They work across schools, colleges, and training settings, and may also support Deaf adults in work placements or their workplace where additional communication support is needed.

Sign Supported English (SSE)

BSL/English Interpreters; NRCPD Registered or equivalent

Sign Supported English (SSE) uses BSL signs but follows the spoken English syntax. This differs from BSL which has its distinct grammar and syntax.

Relay Intralingual Interpreters

NRCPD Registered or equivalent

Relay Intralingual Interpreters, commonly referred to as Deaf Relays, are Deaf language professionals who work alongside BSL/English interpreters to support effective communication.

They are skilled in working with d/Deaf individuals who have minimal language skills or have additional communication needs, including individuals with mental health conditions or learning disabilities.

By adapting and relaying information in a way that is accessible, they help ensure communication is clear, accurate, and fully understood.

Thank you so much for sending two outstanding signers. They were excellent. I would definitely recommend them
