The big launch: Deaf Awareness e-learning & BSL Sign & Spell Smartphone app
The biggest news to be announced this month is our unique Deaf Awareness e-learning programme which aims to improve the communication between Deaf and hearing people; it is the first Deaf Awareness course available completely online.
Sean Nicholson, co-founder and CEO of Sign Solutions, says: "I believe this course is perfect for those busy professionals who need this information but cannot take time out to attend a course. Not only those in the working environment, but people at home with caring responsibilities, looking to return to work or just improve their knowledge of the Deaf Community, can now do so - quickly, easily and at a low cost."
The course is split into five bite-sized modules, and is designed to be interactive and fun with quizzes after each section to ensure successful learning. Users will even be able to pick up some basic sign language phrases and finger-spelling skills, all of which can be practiced further with the help of Sign Solutions' new finger-spelling Smartphone app, BSL Sign & Spell.
The Smartphone app, launched together with our revolutionary e-learning programme, is a step-by-step guide through the finger-spelling alphabet, providing the initial move towards successfully communicating with a BSL user. Not only will the brand new app enable Smartphone users to broaden their communicative capabilities, but it will contribute to the improvement of children's lives across the UK: 50p of each individual sale has been donated to national charity Children in Need.
BSL Sign & Spell takes the user through each letter of the alphabet with the help of two videos showing the front and side view of each sign. This makes learning easy, and a quick quiz after every few letters allows the learner to check their progress. The app is an exceptionally handy tool which lets BSL learners revise their alphabet anywhere, at the touch of a button.
Sean Nicholson explains how the idea for BSL Sign & Spell came about: "I remember getting a finger-spelling card at Scouts and being fascinated by this new language. This app does exactly the same thing, but with the added convenience of having the finger-spelling played out on videos on our Smartphones, in our pockets!"
